Breaking Analysis is a new Escalation Trap series providing immediate assessments of major developments—not simply explaining what happened, but identifying the strategic logic that points to what is likely to happen next.

July 29 BLUF

Shortly after Trump’s meeting with Netanyahu, Iran launched an attempted surprise ballistic missile attack targeting U.S. forces in Jordan. All incoming projectiles were successfully intercepted by air defenses. The IRGC explicitly stated that its Aerospace Force targeted a U.S. military Central Command center inside Jordan.

Iran’s aerial assault shattered a brief, multi-day lull in the regional conflict. Global oil prices jumped 5% following news of renewed hostilities.

KEEPING YOU AHEAD

As all media are now reporting, this assault shows Iran’s shift from firing on US forces in retaliation for American strikes on its territory. With the surprise missile strike, Iran is willing to take the fight to the US on its own terms. Readers of the Escalation Trap could see this coming weeks ahead, as these events are exactly what the June 15 Escalation Trap This Week expected would occur as Iran moved into its period of maximum leverage with oil inventories running to tank bottoms and on the expected timeline.

Why Jordan, why now, what’s Iran’s strategic objective (the “message”), and what does this mean for the future of the Escalation Trap?

My assessment is below.
