Although no direct Iranian attack on the city of Aqaba (Jordan), the U.S. Embassy in Amman issued an emergency security alert advising Americans to avoid Aqaba’s international airport and seaport due to a specific and credible threat. The security advisory follows a wider escalation in the region. Recent Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. forces in Jordan—which resulted in the deaths of American service members—have led to retaliatory U.S. strikes on Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) coastal facilities.

Update as I am about to push send: Air raid sirons are going off in Jordan, warning that Iran missiles are incoming against Aqaba.

Aqaba is Jordan’s only coastal city and serves as a major resort destination. Located on the northern tip of the Red Sea, it functions simultaneously as a luxury tourist getaway, a deep-water commercial port, and a gateway to Jordan’s desert attractions.

The threat to Aqaba widens the war, but why? As a new threat to luxury tourism, simple incremental expansion of infrastructure targeting, or something else?
